Nov 2016 | On November 14 and 15th, Jan could attend the Medica 2016 in Duesseldorf. With many new contacts and new developments. One of the major steps forward was meeting Mr. Lu Liansheng of Beijing Kinseng Medical based in Beijing, China. Through him the Chinese version of the book is being compiled. I could see a first proof print! | |
Netherlands | Nov 2016 | On November 7th the final lecture evening of the second edition an e-leaning program for staff of sterilization departments of hospitals in the Netherlands took place. The final evening for the 33 students that subscribed, took again place at the Summa college in Eindhoven. There were lectures on microbiology, cleaning and sterilization. Australia, Brisbane | October 2015 | The 17th WFHSS (World Forum for Hospital Sterilization Sciences) took place on Oct 25th until Oct 29th in Brisbane, Australia. On Saturday, October 2th Jan could do a presentation on his expierences in Liberia: The aftermath of the Ebola crisis. Hospitals in Liberia preparing for the post Ebola challenge. May-July 2015 | St. Joseph’s Hospital; Monrovia. Renovation of the sterilisation department of the St. Josephs Hospital. Redesign of the department. An older KSG sterilizer was overhauled. A new Matachana S501 automatic autoclave and a Steriflow Robustex manual autoclave were installed and commissioned. Upon completion, staff was trained. | |
Liberia | May-July 2015 | JF Kennedy Medical Center, Monrovia. Collaboriation with the local staff for repair and commissioning of the Matachana S1000 autoclave in the Maternity Hospital. Upon successful acceptance tests, staff was trained and production initiated. | |
Steriflow, France |
2015-2 | Visit SteriFlow, sterilizer factory in France. They focus on the production of large sterilizers for the pharmaceutical industry. They however also build the Robustex autoclave, a small, manual operated autoclave designed for use in health facilities in remote areas. It is the autoclave of choice by MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) and DRK (German Red Cross) for use in the emergency hospitals. The visit was for evaluation of the Robustex, planned to be procured for St. Josephs hospital in Monrovia, Liberia | |
Spain | 2015-1 | Visit Matachana. For a technical training on the S1000 and S501 autoclaves. As a preparation for a visit to hospitals in Monrovia Liberia, where these autoclaves are to be repaired, commissioned and trained on. | |

Tigray | 1992 | Evaluation of medical equipment maintenance services in Tigray; the most northern part of the current Ethiopia. At the time, early 1991 controlled by TPLF. Tigray was supplied through food convoys organized through REST, the Relief Society of Tigray, at the time based in London. REST was supported by MEMISA, based in the Netherlands, that requested me to do the evaluation. During the visit a final offensive to Addis Abbeba took place, ending the rule of the then Emperor Mengisto. I kept a diary on the events with the title; From a Fly to a Lion. In due time this story will be also on this site. | |

2015-2016 | Building the garden house. A long-term dream come true: Building our garden house. We called it “Akwaaba”, “Welcome” in the Ghanaian Twi language. It is a reference to our time that we lived in Ghana in the 1980’s and shared a great time with the Ghanaian people, where we met each other and where we married! | ||
